Friday night, T loaded more canned Diet Coke into the fridge. It would be prime drinking temp in the morning. I woke up on Saturday and after a little while, I went to grab one of these frosty Diet Coke's to drink. The only problem was that it wasn't any colder on Saturday morning than it was on Friday night. Well, that's not good.
So I tried various things, including a phone call to Dad to diagnose the problem. Since the freezer was working just fine, Dad and I decided the best route was to unload the fridge contents into an ice chest to keep cool and turn off the fridge portion and let it "rest" for a while. I also dusted coils and vacuumed, etc. After 3 hours, I kicked it back on and NOTHING!
Since my first diagnostic route didn't work, I tried my second - the Internet. Yes, you, Internet. Apparently you hold the answer to everything. After googling several different things, I got up to check to see if the freezer was TOO COLD and yep, it was. The freezer was frozen up, thus blocking the fan to blow cold air into the fridge.
At this point, T was home and we unloaded the freezer into the freezer outside and turned the whole thing off. We opened the freezer door, put towels on the floor and left it. We woke up this morning to soaking wet towels on the floor, but a completely defrosted refrigerator. I mopped up all the water and plugged her back in.
VOILA! Internet, you were right. It was our freezer being too cold that caused our fridge to be too hot. We are hoping that maybe it just didn't get closed well enough one night. If that's not the case, it could be a list of other parts that I read about. So we'll just keep an eye on it. At least for now, we have the free fix. And that's always best!!
And as I report this, I am enjoying a frosty cold Diet Coke!
