Didn't see this coming

Rufus has been gone for almost 9 months now and we had settled into what I thought was the new dog "norm". Copper and Rufus had the same dog bed because during the night they would always swap around. They always wanted what the other one had. So those two beds were always side by side.

After Rufus was gone, we left the second bed in there because Copper would lay in the bed that Rufus always started out in at night. It was obvious she missed him and we wanted to keep his scent around for her. Copper quickly told B that he was not welcome near Rufus's stuff.

We slowly introduced B into the house but he didn't start sleeping inside until September. And we bought him a nice big bed and we put it on the other side of the room from Copper and Rufus's beds. Not because we didn't want them together, but because Copper was very protective of Rufus's space still. And rightfully so, B could still smell Rufus and knew he'd get in trouble for being in the Old Man's spot (not by us, of course). Let's just say, Rufus was the boss of him.

So imagine our surprise when T woke up the other morning and saw both of them curled up together in the corner of the room. Neither was in a bed but in a new, previously undefined area of the room. If he'd had the camera, he'd have taken a picture.

Last night, as we got ready for bed, B was sitting right next to Copper's bed waiting on her. It was so cute. She pranced in and layed down and then he did. I made the decision to move his bed over next to her. And they slept peacefully.

This is really new for us. Copper and Rufus co-existed and learned to love each other's company. But they were never cuddly. They were always trying to get what the other one had - thus 2 of everything exactly the same. I never expected Copper to be cuddly with another dog, but B isn't quite the bully that Rufus could be.

Either that, or they know something life changing is coming and they better work together....

Life changing is right! It will be interesting to see how the dogs compete for attention when the baby comes. I would venture to guess that you'll have more problems with the dogs than the baby.

If Copper and B can coexist peacefully, it gives me hope for Luna, Cliff and Titus all being friends!!

Send some of those vibes to NJ....our cats need it now! :)
